PRESIDENT'S
REPORT
Dennis M. King,
FAIA
2007 AIA Michigan President
What a Fantastic AIA150 Spring So Far…
Maybe it's just an annual rite of spring for us
at AIA Michigan, or perhaps it's the AIA150
focus, but I can assure you that the months of
March and April have been a fantastic whirlwind
of outstanding activities for our organization.
We can be justifiably proud of what has taken
place and what we have accomplished. Here is a
snapshot of some of what we have accomplished: |
" In early March we
hosted another sold-out Health Facilities
Conference in conjunction with the Michigan
Architectural Foundation at the Amway Grand
Hotel in Grand Rapids. This event keeps growing
larger every year, attracting clients,
contractors, consultants and healthcare industry
colleagues of all sorts. Make sure to get your
registrations in early next year.
" Our "drumbeat" about the importance of
persistent legislative action on the part of our
profession proved to be successful. We held our
annual Legislative Day in Lansing in conjunction
with MSPE and ACEC on March 20, and we enjoyed a
record turn-out of AIA advocates once again.
This year there were 75 AIA representatives
participating and lobbying - a 50% increase over
last year's record attendance. As is our custom,
we were also invited to participate in the
Kelley Cawthorne-sponsored Legislative "Howling"
Reception at the end of that exciting day.
Similarly, our AIA Upper Peninsula Chapter held
their first annual Legislative Day in Marquette
on Friday, March 23. An additional dozen AIA
architects participated in that event, bringing
this year's total involvement to about 87
members. Congratulations and thank you all -
particularly to our very active Government
Affairs Committee membership!
" April ushered
in the first-ever annual National Architecture
Week, the 9th-14th. While the week was not
planned to be a cornerstone of our AIA150
initiatives here in Michigan, there was plenty
going on nonetheless. AIA Southwest Michigan
held an outstanding Awards Banquet on April
12th, and AIA Grand Valley held their annual
Banquet on April 14. In the interim, AIA Grand
Valley also conducted their AIA150 Design
Charrettes that week, covering three separate
communities. AIA Detroit held a presentation of
one portion of their AIA150 Charrette results in
Royal Oak on the 14th as well. Proclamations
from our Governor, from both houses of our
legislature, as well as from several of the
local Chapters' communities were issued in
support of National Architecture Week. For me,
it was a week of "bloging" in the e-Publication,
MetroMode, in honor
of National Architecture Week. That was a trip!
" Finally, we held our official AIA150
Celebration as a part of our two-day AIA
Michigan Honor Awards Gala and the companion
Saturday Design Brunch. Held at the Inn at St.
John's in Plymouth, we counted about 250 people
for the Honor recognitions and Design Awards,
and about 60 at the Millennium Park Design
Brunch which was co-sponsored by the Michigan
ASLA. We've received lots of positive feedback
about the entire event - including how nice the
venue was too. Thanks to all who participated.
Now we're on to May. It'll be the AIA National
Convention in San Antonio Texas the first week,
culminating with the annual Cinco de Mayo
Celebration. Then, make sure that you attend the
Masonry Institute's Annual "M" Awards Banquet at
the Laurel Manor on Thursday, May 10. It's
always a fun recognition of architectural
excellence.
In August, we hope to see you at the always
outstanding Mid-Summer Conference at the Grand
Hotel. Held August 9-11, it'll be our third
straight year holding the conference in
conjunction with the Associated General
Contractors. This collaboration has proven to be
very exciting and very important for both
organizations.
So - get involved. AIA150 is providing numerous
opportunities for you to participate, prosper
and be proud of AIA. |

been held for the 2006 Michigan Mechanical, Plumbing and

general, discussions should take place with local
jurisdictions for projects that may be going for permits
near the transition time to establish which code the
project will be permitted under. Note: Although January
1, 2008 is the target date, the State has been
unpredictable in how well it hits the target date. The
new code books will not be published until after the
Codes are adopted by the State legislature. Copies of
the State proposed adjustments to the 2006 ICC Codes are

resource providing architects quick access to
information they need. Search results are displayed
graphically with links to related content. Soloso, which
represents the idea of “single source” for architectural
information, provides insight and knowledge for
architects—solutions, strategies, products, and trends.
Convention attendees will be able to experience this
beta version of Soloso at the Knowledge booth within AIA
Town Square. Feel free to test Soloso yourself so you

When AIA Contract
Documents are in force, everyone's interests are in
balance. Based on the widely-accepted Microsoft®
Word platform, and updated in November 2006, the
entirely redesigned AIA Contract Documents software (for
Windows OS) lets you create, share, and manage documents
with ease.
Even the popular AIA
Contract Administration and Project Management Forms,
the G Forms, can be completed in Word, making it easy
for the project team to collaborate at the construction
site or wherever they’re located. Given the complexity
of today’s design and construction projects, shouldn’t
you be using the best contract document tool available?
