1. MESSAGE FROM AIAMI PRESIDENT JEFFREY HAUSMAN, AIA

Fall 2006
- Post Labor Day thoughts and actions. I hope everyone had a wonderful
Labor Day Weekend. Fall is in the air, the days are getting shorter,
mornings are becoming crisp and if you're like me your children started
school. Therefore, if your kids are going to be doing homework it is
time for you to think about the same thing. Are you up to date on your
continuing education credits?
Check out your
transcript at

If you're not up to date there is an
excellent opportunity to earn all of your required (8) Health Safety and
Welfare learning Units for the year at 17th annual AIA Michigan Design
Retreat. The retreat is held at Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Torch Lake the
weekend of September 15 -17. I guarantee that you will learn something
and meet some new people. How can I be so sure? Because there are always
students that attend this annual event, so there is always someone new
to meet. The students also bring a different perspective - you'll hear
questions from their point of view. The presentations are based on the
award winning projects from the AIA Michigan Honor Awards so the
architecture is first rate too. This year's guest speaker is Bob Benson.
Bob is a former Detroiter and LTU professor. He is now the Dean of the
School of Architecture and Interior Design at Miami University in
Oxford, Ohio. I'm looking forward to hearing his thoughts. I'll be at
the retreat and would really like to see you there. One final
enticement, if you like being out on a golf course you can also get in a
scramble on Friday afternoon. Art Smith tells me everyone has a good
time no what theirmatter skill level.
I hope to see
you for this excellent program. Check out the registration form at:

The next AIA Michigan Board Meeting is
going to be a special event that you will not want to miss. Bob Daverman
(AIA Grand Valley Chapter and AIA Michigan Board Member) has organized a
lessons learned and look forward presentation on the January 2005 West
Michigan Regional Design Charrette. This Charrette was unique because of
the multi-jurisdictional inclusion and regional framework. The approach
was framed by the goal of identifying the hidden assets within the focus
area and illustrating the value or opportunities they could bring to the
redevelopment of the urban area at large. Since then, what has happened?
Listen and learn from the mayor and city managers of the communities
involved. Also, learn how the Grand Valley Chapter is taking the next
step with its next forum and delivering on the AIA promise of a gift to
our communities with the Blue Print for America through AIA150. The
Board meeting is on October 19 at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. If you
want to join us please let Cathy Mosley of AIA Michigan know. She can
provide additional details.
Finally, a quick look back at the great
63rd annual Mid-Summer Conference held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac
Island the weekend of August 4 -5. It was a great time that we shared
with the contractors of AGC Detroit and Michigan. We learned about Risky
Business and Building Information Modeling. We heard from the new
Executive Vice President and CEO of AIA National, Christine McEntee and
First Vice-President and President Elect for 2008, Marshall Purnell,
FAIA. By the way Marshall grew up in Grand Rapids and is a graduate of
the University of Michigan. We played Bocci and Golf. We toured
wonderful cottages and had great food. It was a spectacular way to enjoy
the many benefits of belonging to the AIA, gaining new knowledge,
advocating for our profession with one of the groups that affects us
most, the contractors and enjoying the fellowship of other architects.
Make your plans now to join us next year. The dates are August 9 -12,
2007.
Also during the
mid-summer conference we elected the AIA Michigan Executive Committee
for 2007. It will be:
Dennis
King, FAIA - President
Stephen Smith, AIA - Vice President/President Elect
Ron Campbell, AIA - Treasurer
Alan Cobb, FAIA, Secretary
Celeste Novak, AIA - Regional Director
Jeff Hausman, AIA - Past President
Rae Dumke, Honorary AIA - Executive Director
Currently we are searching for a new
chair of the public awareness committee. If you are interested in public
affairs and the AIA we would be glad to give you more information about
how you can assist AIA Michigan with fulfilling this critical portion of
our mission.
As an aside, with Marshall Prunell's
election to the position of First Vice President/President Elect that
will make 3 out of 5 AIA National presidents with Michigan connections -
Gene Hopkins, FAIA (president 2004), R. K. Stewart, FAIA (president
2007) and Marshall Prunell, FAIA (president 2008). Michigan continues to
provide leadership and service to our profession
Please let me know if you have
suggestions for how we can serve you better as a member. One of our
goals is to continue to improve our services to our members.
I am continuing to work with our
committees and board to Design a Better Michigan through the AIA.
