1. Message from AIAMI
President Randy Case, AIA and Executive Director Rae Dumke, Hon. AIA -
Mackinac Island: Four Big Meetings
There were
presidents and vice presidents everywhere … AIA Michigan hosted four
back-to-back meetings in August at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.
AIAMI ’s Annual Mid-Summer Conference attracted 300 members and guests
(including 80 children!) August 4-6. Then AIA National representatives
and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Executive Committee met
with Michigan folks, prior to their meetings August 8-10. Following the
national meetings, AIAMI hosted the AIA Council of Architectural
Component Executives from around the country, which included state
society executives, plus National officers and staff. Our
collective voice has never been stronger influencing national issues of
importance to AIA Michigan than it was this year.
Highlights of the
AIAMI meeting included presentations by noted international
photographer Balthazar Korab, Hon. AIAMI , and Robert Ivey, FAIA, editor
of Architectural Record. AIAMI Business Manager Cathy
Mosley, Hon. AIAMI , was recognized for 25 years of dedicated service to
the association with a gift from AIAMI and the board of directors,
and resolution from AIA National President Gene Hopkins (from Michigan).
We were delighted to
host Gene, 1st VP Doug Stiedl, FAIA from Ohio, and newly
elected 1st VP Kate Schwennsen from Iowa. AIA members came
from Texas, California,
Iowa, North Carolina,
Ohio,
Illinois,
Washington, D.C., Virginia,
New Jersey and New York. Canadians represented Toronto,
Ottawa
and Alberta.
And the CACE members
from 33 states really enjoyed Michigan hospitality. The CACE meeting was
“unplugged” – no PowerPoint. Response to educational programs on
association topics was excellent, plus executive directors enjoyed
historic island cottage tours with Phil Porter and Gene Hopkins. An exec
from Texas wrote: Thank you, Rae Dumke, for the fabulous hospitality
at such a wonderful place. I am certain that all of us who attended the
CACE Annual Meeting feel that we had the professional experience of our
lifetime… sitting on the porch was an added treat.
2. Novak Elected
Regional Director
AIA
Michigan Past President Celeste
Allan Novak was elected Regional Director at the AIAMI Annual
Meeting in August on Mackinac Island. As Regional Director, Novak will
represent Michigan architects on the National AIA Board of Directors.
An associate architect with SmithGroup, Novak
practices environmental design, mixed use, brownfields and community
design. “I practice, teach and speak out about sustainability, historic
preservation, LEED, green design, masonry, women in architecture and
good planning,” says Novak. She currently serves as a member of two
state boards studying smart growth, and sits on her local planning
commission.
3. Governor
Granholm in Executive Directive No. 2003-25,
Governor
Granholm has
requested that the Michigan Department of Transportation incorporate
context sensitive design into transportation projects whenever feasible.
Context Sensitive Design and Solutions means a "collaborative,
interdisciplinary approach involving stake holders for the development
of a transportation facility that fits its physical setting and
preserves scenic, aesthetic, historic, and environmental resources,
while maintaining safety and mobility."
AIA Michigan has been asked to comment on drafts of policies. We will be
sending rough drafts of committee sessions on the Environment,
Aesthetics, and History, Culture and Community. Please
contact Celeste Novak with your comments: celestenov@aol.com. This
is our opportunity to contribute to the design of our state.
4. The Debut of a Uniform,
National "Rolling Clock" for the ARE
After
spirited discussion during NCARB's 2004 Annual Meeting, a majority of
Council Member Boards passed a resolution officially creating a "rolling
clock" standard for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). Under
the terms of the rolling clock, which will be officially implemented on
January 1, 2006, candidates for the ARE must pass the nine-division exam
within five years. Three transitional rules will guide this process.
Visit the
NCARB website
for more information.
5. NCARB Releases
Results of 2004 Survey of Registered Architects
A
survey
by the NCARB reveals there are more than 100,000 architects in the
U.S. Results indicate that a total of 101,179 architects are living in
the 55 reporting jurisdictions. The survey also reveals a total of
109,757 reciprocal (out-of-state) registrants and 210,936 total
registrations in the U.S. This means, on average, an architect is
registered in two jurisdictions. Michigan data shows 3,564 resident
architects and 2,313 reciprocal registrants, for a total of 5,877
architects registered in the state.
6. School’s In
Session: Time to Try Out New Architecture Curriculum
Earlier
this year, the Michigan Architectural Foundation released its highly
anticipated curriculum designed to introduce elementary schoolchildren
to architecture and the built environment. “Architecture: It’s
Elementary” encompasses fundamentals of art, social studies, language
arts, history, science and math. The web-based materials, developed with
input from Michigan architects and educators, include ten lesson plans
for each elementary school year. The curriculum is available at no cost
in PDF format at
www.k5architecture.org.
Tell your local school about it today!
