1. Message from AIAMI President Randy Case

I would like to thank all of our dedicated chapter executive committees, directors and their families for braving the intense cold and wind to attend our Leadership Retreat. Held January 16-17 in Traverse City, the retreat focused on “Livable Communities: The Impact of Design.” I’ve heard from many members who enjoyed the programs and camaraderie (especially the Barry Manilow lovers – you know who you are!).

The retreat started out with a very early morning interview on Michigan Talk Radio with myself and John Ratliff, director of the Center for Livable Communities for AIA National. We talked about Livable Communities and how this fits in with Gov. Granholms’ “Cool Cities” agenda. I offered how AIA architects can and do work with communities to help create a better quality of life and highlighted the reason for AIA Michigan’s retreat and agenda this year.

3. Congratulations to AIA Michigan’s Newest Fellows

John Allegretti, FAIA has advanced the practice of architecture by engaging in the design of socially conscious, affordable, sustainable housing and urban and neighborhood redevelopment.

Sam Bayne, FAIA advances the standards of design through exemplary focus on excellence, award-winning architecture, commitment to AIA, and nurturing of young talent.  A quintessential designer, he brings integrity and singular vision to extraordinarily complex projects.

4. AIA Michigan Regional Director Candidates

At this time AIA Michigan has two candidates for Regional Director that were nominated at the Leadership retreat in Traverse City.  Other candidates may be nominated prior to June 1st.   Please contact AIA Michigan if there are any other interested candidates.  We will publish a complete bio as well as the candidates platform in upcoming issues of the E-News.

bullet Celeste Allen Novak, AIA

Celeste has over 18 years experience in a wide variety of architectural disciplines, including LEEDs and sustainable design.  She is a passionate advocate of Green Architecture and Livable Communities, lecturing at major universities, speaking out at public forums and serving on planning boards and commissions.  She has always been committed to the American Institute of Architects, most recently as President of AIA Michigan.  She is also a loyal and hard-working member of AIA Huron Valley, becoming president in 1996.  Celeste is a University of Michigan graduate and a project manager with the SmithGroup.  She is active in several organizations devoted to the arts.

bullet Park Smith, AIA

Park is a Flint native and worked in several offices in the area.  He is now a sole practitioner with offices in Linden.  He is an avid naturalist and fly fisher.  He has held most of the offices in AIA Michigan and AIA Flint and has served on numerous committees in both organizations.  He was president of AIA Michigan in 1998.  He has been an active participant in the Mid Summer Conference Committee.  Last year he was instrumental in the publication of the Flint Guide to Architecture.  The Flint Chapter earned a Component Excellence Award from the National Institute this year.  Park is active with the Flint Institute of Arts and a former chair of the Flint Historic District Commission.

 6. Jackson Project Brings “Cool” Into Focus

Recently, Michigan’s civic leaders have been a-buzz with thoughts of coolness – looking for ways in which they can reinvent their communities with this crucial, yet elusive factor. One project being acclaimed as a model of cool development is the Armory Park Arts Project – the McIntosh Poris Associates-designed transformation of Jackson’s former armory building into a live/work artists’ community. The project was featured at a recent Creating Cool Conference, serving as a primary example of how arts organizations and developers can work together to create cool cities.

7. NCARB’s Newest Monograph Explores Smart Growth

The NCARB recently released Getting to Smart Growth: 100 Policies for Implementation, the fifteenth title in its health, safety and welfare-enriched monograph series. Ten principles characterizing the successful implementation of smart growth tenets serve as chapter headings. Each principle is then linked to 10 specific smart growth tools and policies. Complete a quiz to earn LUs. To order the monograph, visit NCARB’s Website at www.ncarb.org/publications.

8. December Slips Two Percent; 2003 Construction Up Overall

New construction starts settled back two percent in December, according to McGraw-Hill Construction. The housing sector remained steady at a high volume in December, but declines were reported for nonresidential building and public works. For 2003 as a whole, total construction advanced three percent. This follows a one percent growth for total construction in 2002. For more 2003 construction data, click here www.dodge.construction.com/Analytics/trends_022004.asp

9. More A/E Firms Shift Health Care Costs to Workers

Architecture, engineering, planning and environment consulting firms are becoming more and more likely to require employees to contribute to health insurance premiums, a new report shows. Data from ZweigWhite’s 2004 Policies, Procedures & Benefits Survey show 61 percent of firms require employees to contribute to both employee-only and employee/family health insurance premiums, while 57 percent require employees to contribute to both types of dental insurance premiums. Both numbers hit an all-time high in this latest edition of the survey report, and have increased consistently from just 40 percent and 45 percent reported four years ago for health and dental insurance premiums, respectively.
