1. Message from AIAM President Tim Casai, FAIA

With this edition of E-News, we are really excited to officially announce the publication of the Curriculum Guide for Elementary School Students. In the works for two years, this program has been developed by a dedicated committee of architects and teachers chaired by Rocco Romano, AIA.

As an outgrowth of AIA Michigan’s Public Awareness initiative, the goal of this program is to make available to every elementary school in the state, a creative and well-written curriculum tool to teach youngsters in grades K-5 the basic elements and ideas of architecture. The result of the committee’s diligent work is a 400-page notebook filled with 60 lesson plans, 10 for each grade level. The materials include written lessons, graphics, vocabulary and classroom activities designed to engage the young learner’s mind with architecture.

The committee feels strongly that this early education approach to teaching the public about architectural concepts will have positive outcomes in terms of public awareness of architecture, and will plant seeds for future architects and clients alike. The potential exists for this to become a legacy project by which architects may influence the future of the profession and of the built environment.

The second benefit to us as architects is the opportunity to interact with our local schools on a true grassroots basis. By agreeing to be a liaison or a “guest teacher” during the presentation of the lesson plans, architects will be visible and involved in their communities, and experience the real power of education. You are the connection between these architectural ideas and the real world outside the classroom.

This program has been field tested during the past school year in the Clawson School District, and will be expanded during the coming school year on a pilot basis to include 20-30 other districts around the state. The Curriculum Guide will then be edited through feedback from the pilot program and then placed on the AIA Michigan Web site for all school districts and all teachers to access and use. The ultimate key to success will be the involvement of local chapters and their members at the community level. Many architects have volunteered already to be a part of the pilot year. If you are interested in being a part of the future of this program, please e-mail Rocco at rromano@tmp-architecture.com.

This is one of several new AIA Michigan programs to help you, the member, influence the way the public thinks about architects and architecture. In the coming months you will hear more about the Mentoring Network chaired by Tom Mathison, AIA, and the Media Program chaired by Susan Pultorak, AIA. With your help, we are getting the word out.
