1. Michigan Architect Seeks State Senate Seat

Architect Brian Craig, senior vice president and chairman of the board of Progressive AE, is running for the Republican nomination for the 29th District in the August 6 primary. A member of AIA Michigan and AIA Grand Valley, Craig has served on the Grand Rapids School Board and on numerous other charitable and civic boards. Upon victory in the primary, Craig will face the Democratic challenger in the general election held on November 5. The 29th District includes Grand Rapids, Kenwood, and Lowell, as well as Cascade, Lowell, Vergennes and Grattan Townships.

2. AIA Huron Valley Presents Honor Awards

AIA Huron Valley presented David Esau, AIA with its Young Architect Award. The following were recognized with Honor Awards from AIA Huron Valley:

·        St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor, Architects Design Group

·        Pool Pavilion at Grosse Pointe Country Club, Damian Farrell Design Group

·        Kalamazoo Public Library, David Milling Associates

3. ESD Presents Construction and Design Awards

ESD The Engineering Society presented its prestigious 28th Annual Construction and Design Awards at a June ceremony. Nine projects throughout Michigan and one from New York City received recognition including (each project's architect is noted in parenthesis):

·        Barton Malow Headquarters, Southfield (Barton Malow Design)

·        Downriver Regional Wastewater Storage and Transport System, Wyandotte (Wade-Trim and NTH Consultants, Ltd.)

·        Driveability Test Facility, Allen Park (Jacobs Sverdrup)

·        Historic Renovation of Fort Mackinac, Mackinac Island (SmithGroup)

·        Michigan Vietnam Monument, Lansing (A. L. Gordon, Architect)

·        Montcalm Community College Beatrice E. Doser Building, Sidney (Straub Pettitt Yaste)

·        New Detroit Science Center, Detroit (Neumann/Smith & Associates and BEI Associates, Inc.)

·        Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Plymouth (HarleyEllis)

·        Rockefeller University Pedestiran Bridge, New York City (Wendy Evans Joseph Architecture)

·        V.A. Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Ann Arbor (Harley Ellis)

4. Dumke To Be Named State Association Leader

AIAM Executive Director Rae Dumke, Hon. AIA was named 2002-2003 chairman of the Michigan Society of Association Executives. Celebrating its 75th anniversary, MSAE functions as an information resource and professional network for more than 700 executives in Michigan’s association and nonprofit communities.

5. Sustainable Design Enthusiasts Convene

On September 28, the Design Futures Council will convene many of the brightest minds in the A/E/C professions to focus on creating visionary strategies and an actionable agenda for the environment. This program is a policy advisory session created to help prepare and equip individual designers and firms with an agenda and recommended strategies needed to move forward in green and sustainable design. Architects Environment Summit will be held on Nantucket Island, MA. (10 HS&W learning units) For more information visit www.di.net/summit.

6.Five Honored with NOVA Awards

In recognition of innovations in construction, the Construction Innovation Forum has selected five innovations as winners of the acclaimed NOVA Award. A brief description follows, for further details visit www.cif.org.

·        Electro-Osmotic Pulse System (EOP) for innovation in basement waterproofing;

·        Ground Penetrating Imaging Radar (GPIR) for subsurface exploration and mapping underground infrastructure;

·        Interlocking, Mortar-less Brick Siding (Novabrik) for innovation in exterior wall materials and construction;

·        Multi-Span Suspended Bridge Platform (Safespan) for innovation in bridge construction, renovation and maintenance;

Reinforced Tied-Arch Truss for innovation in arena roof design and construction.

7. Call for Entries

I.D.E.A.S. (Innovative Design and Excellence in Architecture with Steel), sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction, recognizes designs where structural steel forms a prominent architectural feature of a building. For criteria, award and entry information visit www.aisc.org. Submissions much be postmarked by Mar. 1, 2003.

8. Design & Construction Expo 2003 Update

Architectural Alley, exhibits for the design industry, is a new feature of the Design & Construction Expo 2003. The event is slated for Feb. 12-13 at the Pontiac Silverdome. Interested exhibitors should call the Construction Association of Michigan at (248) 972-1000.

Meanwhile a national seach will be launched to fill the position vacated by Dr. Neville Clouten, who served as Dean for a dozen years …  A 40-person delegation from Korea visited Deerfield Elementary School in Novi, which was designed by Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. The award-winning school design will serve as a benchmark for future schools in Korea …  Two construction firms were among the top 20 of Crains Detroit Business Private 200 list, ranked by 2001 revenue. Barton Malow Co. placed ninth on the list, while Walbridge Aldinger Co. ranked sixteenth … Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. and Atlas Technologies, Inc., a supplier of pressroom automation equipment and stamping systems, have formed a strategic alliance to address the specialized needs of the stamping industry … New in bookstores is "Residential Archicture: Living Places"  published by the Ashley Group.
