ADVOCACY |
AIA Detroit continues to press forward with a comprehensive local
Public Awareness program. It remains critically important that
Architects heighten our roles as leaders in our community by promoting
the benefits that our profession contributes to our built environment.
As such, we must improve the public’s understanding of the profession of
architecture and the objectives of AIA.
Activities for 2005 will continue and will build on past initiatives.
- The AIA Detroit House Tour is an important way for the
public to experience quality residential design in southeastern
Michigan. Visitors can see the positive impact a home or addition
designed by a licensed architect.
-
Urban Affairs
The Metropolitan Detroit region continues to need professionals,
like those in AIA Detroit Chapter, to strive to be an influence on
opinion and decision-making within the City of Detroit and surrounding
communities. The Urban Priorities Committee will start the year by
working collaboratively with the League of Women Voters to host a
“Forum on Smart Growth” in February. We will stand ready to
collaborate in the future with any southeastern municipality.
AIA Detroit will continue to support the Urban Policy Advisory Team
(UPAT) and the Urban Priorities Committee.
- Government Affairs
AIAD has learned the importance of plugging into the political
structures at a local, state, and national level to influence the
legislation and regulation that has impact on our profession’s
interests. Support of AIAM Government Affairs Committee will continue
through:
Sponsorship of awareness events
Participation in fundraisers for legislators who support our
concerns
Communication with members
Cooperation with allied organizations in lobbying and political
action
- Articles that focus on Sustainability, Livable Communities, and
Quality of Life issues in the Detroit Metropolitan Are, and the role
Architects play in forwarding this agenda, will continue to be sought
for publication in a variety of media.
- AIA Detroit will continue to voice opinions regarding the issues
and initiatives that effect our build environment. Topics still to be
fully engaged include:
Urban Sprawl
Historic Preservation
Regional Planning Concerns
Brownfield Site Redevelopment
Mass Transportation

COMMUNITY |
We will work this year to improve communication with current
members by updating email address, sending notices of important dates
via US Mail and structuring the Chapter web page to quickly display
relevant information and making available useful links.
We will solicit input from members on preferred communication
methods and work to streamline information delivery.
In a addition to the chapter’s regular schedule of events listed
below, the Recognitions Committee will be asked to make
recommendations to the Board for recognition of newly registered
architects.
Honor Awards Program
Annual Holiday Open House at Beaubien House
House Tour next Fall
Annual Meeting
AIA Detroit will secure a future by embracing the young membership
needs by gearing programs to the emerging professional. We will
consider Associate Forums to address the issues facing the next
generation.
AIA Detroit will continue to support from the Detroit Chapter in
the AIA student-mentoring program. The goal is to have each student in
contact with a practicing professional, so that the student has a
direct way of asking questions about and gaining insight into the
practice of architecture.
Chapter members will be invited to participate, through direct
contact by one of the chapter’s leaders, or by a participating mentor.
In the 4-county area, numerous non-profit organizations pursue
goals that overlap the goals of the AIAD. AIAD members should become
engaged in these organizations; the AIA may realize a synergy from the
common purposes. The AIAD will continue to seek participation in and
strategic partnerships with:
City mayors and planning departments Regional, County, City, and local government organizations Allied professional organizations:
CSI, Construction Owner’s Association of America, Association of General Contractors,
American Society of Professional Estimators, Cityscape Detroit The Michigan Design Center Detroit Chamber of Commerce
