"Demonstrates the architects ability to
translate a conceptual organization into a legible design and plan for
infrastructure, collaboration and inevitable change. Innovative and economic use
of color in support of way finding strategies that are artful and integral to
the design."

"Leverages materials of common industrial
buildings in compelling ways. You just want to roll up your sleeves and go to
work there! Co-tenancy strategy of joining instead of dividing spaces adds
richness and texture. Re-utilization of a building type that often is
demolished, illustrates that embodied energy is a key part of sustainable
design"

Bagley Avenue Pedestrian Bridge
Detroit, MI "Demonstrates the importance of the GSA’s Design Excellence initiatives.
Begins the process of mitigating the highway’s devastating cut in the urban
fabric. Monumental without overstatement. Demonstrates a commitment to an
evolutionary design process. The design is ultimately a catalyst for change. We
look forward to seeing substantial in-fill at the bridge’s touchdown points to
truly knit and reconnect the urban fabric."

no redeeming value and gives it life with minimum of means. Demonstrates an
often overlooked greening strategy of recycling even the most mundane of
structures."

"This project transforms a late modern campus building into a dynamic
new space for the College. By taking the cues from many of the original
buildings, the existing buildings are given new life. The exterior design opens
the internal program and commons to views and makes critical visual connections
to adjacent buildings"

"A museum design that is for art, not in spite
of it. Innovative structural solution in service to the open plan. New addition
sits well with existing classical structure by taking an antithetical approach.
At first glance this is cleanly and elegantly solved; with a closer look,
complexity and richness emerge."

"Graphics of this unbuilt project are exceptional and will serve to
communicate the project to the community. Representations clearly depict the
information that was essential to decision making. The landscape is a key
connector and a mechanism for unifying the site in sustainable ways. Rendering
goes beyond the heroic and presents the design with a clear sense of place. This
design strategy could be a template for many placeless suburban government
complexes. Coherent and well thought out. We like the way the materials of the
project are a driver for the plan. Meaningful sustainable solution that builds
off what is already there through careful planning and phasing."

"The project takes a deep program and plan of multiple collaborative
departments and creates a clear cohesive whole. The breakdown of the building
massing using contrasting recycled and sustainable materials provides a
substantial expression of the collaborative spatial organization within. The
building is a bold expression in space and material of the College’s commitment
to high quality collaborative learning environments."

"It does not erase everything revealing a site that is a multilayered
palimpsest of uses and conditions. Site plan looks at the short and long term
effectively. The plan should serve to create a great ripple effect beyond the
immediate site. Exemplary model project for the region by redefining
relationships to land and water."

"Compelling and clear connection from the ecological history of the
site and library. Success comes from its didactic approach to the site and the
reuse of the Ash trees. Transcendent of the normal expressions of recycled
materials by the way they are used to unify space. The remaining old forest
becomes a great backdrop to the modern envelope. The commitment to minimizing
the parking footprint while making the building accessible is important to the
use of the site. "

The American Institute of Architects Detroit,
headed by Mark Nickita, AIA, of Birmingham, is a chapter of the 83,000 member
national organization. The mission of the Honor Awards program is two fold, 1)
to show the public “What Architects Do” and to inform about the value and
importance of architectural excellence and 2) to enable architects to better
understand notable achievements so that excellence becomes the standard.
