A
Message from the President
Jeffrey R. Zokas, AIA
AIA Detroit Members,
It is with great honor that I get to inform you about one of our
very own AIA Detroit architects (Mark Nickita) who recently ran for
public office and WON a seat on the Birmingham City Commission. I
feel this is significant news to our members because so few of us
(architects) have the time and or desire to enter politics, yet it
is such an important and influential role in how our cities and
communities evolve.
For many years I served on the AIA National State Government Network
Committee represented by architects from every state. AIA National
was constantly promoting and encouraging AIA Architects to enter the
political arena in order to bring a stronger more educated voice to
the table. Our knowledge and expertise can have a huge influence on
those that do not understand good planning principles and design. I
would like to encourage all of our members to think about this
message and the role you personally could play in helping to make
your local community a better place to live, work and play in.
Congratulations once again to Mark Nickita for taking on this public
role and helping to make the City of Birmingham a better community
in all respects.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey R. Zokas, AIA
